Teenage and Young Adults Network
Principal Treatment Centres
Principal Treatment Centres (PTC) for teenagers and young adults (TYA) are hospitals that have been recognised as specialist experts in TYA cancer. TYA refers to people aged 16 years to 24 years, up to their 25th birthday.
The PTCs work in partnership with Designated Hospitals (DH) to offer integrated joint care across the Yorkshire and Humber region with the view of improving cancer treatment outcomes and survival for all service users. Delivering care in age-appropriate settings, whilst increasing participation in clinical trials, tumour banking and embedding the use of genomic services highlight the overarching aims.
The importance of transition; supporting the service user and family from children’s and TYA services through to adult services in a culturally appropriate and sensitive way is of upmost importance. Combining the integration of data and technology to enable reviews of performance, and to share learnings will demonstrate improvements in all aspects of care.
Each teenager (up to 19th birthday) must be referred to TYA PTC for diagnosis and agreement of treatment plan. Each young adult (19-24 years) must be referred to either TYA PTC or DH having been offered the choice of the two. All service users must be discussed in the TYA MDT, having been offered access to clinical trials and their individual holistic needs identified and met.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
About us
The Teenage and Young Adult (TYA) Cancer Service is based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH) with an ‘outreach approach’ i.e., looking after patients where they are treated, with nursing teams at Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Sheffield Teaching Hospital looking after patients at their respective hospital sites.
Together we care for all patients with cancer from the ages 13 to 25.
We treat and support all teenagers diagnosed before their 16th birthday at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
Patients aged 13 to 16 are also invited to join in with activities and support groups run by the activity co-ordinators.
Patients aged 16 to 19 are treated at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals either at Weston Park Hospital (Solid tumours) or the Royal Hallamshire Hospital (Blood cancers), depending on their diagnosis.
Patients over the age of 19 are offered a choice regarding their preferred place of care, which may include at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (including Weston Park Hospital, or the Royal Hallamshire Hospital), or their local district general hospital; Doncaster Royal Infirmary or Rotherham General Hospital.
Each person has a key worker who they will see regularly while under our care.
Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) funds five expert staff at the unit who work across all sites in the area:
Lead Nurse
2 Youth Support Coordinators
Clinical Nurse Specialist
MDT Co-ordinator
They make sure each person having treatment gets the best possible quality care and is treated as a young person first, cancer patient second.
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals has dedicated teenage and young adult treatment facilities for patients aged 16 – 24 years old, including both inpatient and day case facilities.
The main aim of our units is to provide a friendly environment where patients can receive the medical care and emotional support of specialists, but also the invaluable friendship of others.
Hopefully, this will help the young people to share their experiences at this important stage of their lives, for example, changing self-image, making future career or study plans, dealing with infertility problems, and forming relationships outside the family.
Royal Hallamshire Hospital
The Teenage Cancer Trust P3 unit was opened in 2012 and houses a 4-bed young adult unit on the haematology ward with a two bedded bay and 2 two single rooms. Patients have access to a small multi activities room solely for the use of young adults which contains dedicated TCT laptops, TV, DVDs, and gaming facilities.
All treatment is given by experienced cancer doctors and nurses in age-appropriate facilities in partnership with patients, family, and carers. All patients are allocated a key worker who will always act as their primary contact point.
Weston Park Hospital Teenage Cancer Trust Unit
This purpose-built specialist unit was opened in 2002. It has been designed for the treatment of young people with cancer aged 16-25 years.
There are five beds on the unit, four beds for teenagers and one bed with special facilities for patients having high dose chemotherapy.
All the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and reclining chairs for friends and relatives wishing to stay overnight.
Each bedroom is equipped with:
Electronic bed
Telephone
Television and video
We also fully equipped kitchen for patients to use.
The informal atmosphere in the unit will help patients to relax with each other and their friends, in a relatively non-clinical setting either in the Quiet Room or the Common Room. There is a roof garden where patients can relax when weather permits.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
About us
The Teenage and Young Adult Cancer (TYA) service delivered by Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) covers the Yorkshire, Humber, and the Yorkshire coast region; a population of approximately 4m. The service supports the medical, physical, emotional, and social needs of young cancer patients aged 13 to 24 years.
The team focuses on young people as individuals rather than defining them as cancer patients. They are young people first, who happen to have cancer.
The wards and outpatient areas have been developed by LTHT and the enhancements have been supported by Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) The wards provide a ‘One Unit- Two Site’ model whereby the unit for younger patients at the LGI (Leeds General Infirmary) is managed by Children’s Services, and the unit at SJUH is managed by the adult cancer service.
This service model has gained national and international recognition and is seen as providing excellent care to this group of patients.
We are based within the Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust across two sites with the following facilities:
Leeds General Infirmary
The Ward 33a Teenage Cancer Trust unit was opened in May 2010 at Leeds General Infirmary. It is for 13–18-year-olds and includes an 8 bedded bay with an additional 4 single en-suite beds on Ward 33b for Bone Marrow Transplant patients. All bedrooms are equipped with soft furnishings, bespoke furniture, TV, DVD, and gaming facilities.
Teenage Cancer Trust fund 2 expert staff at the unit:
Nurse Consultant for Leeds and Humber
Youth Support Coordinator
They ensure the best possible quality care is given so that the young person is treated as a young person first and cancer patient second.
Other facilities at Leeds General Infirmary include a recreational room, outside courtyard, quiet room, parent’s room, and kitchen.
St James’s Hospital
Our Teenage Cancer Trust Young Adult Unit at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds is designed for 19–24-year-olds. It has nine in-patient beds and a day-care facility. All bedrooms are equipped with comfortable and cosy soft furnishings, bespoke furniture, TV, DVD, and gaming facilities.
Teenage Cancer Trust funds one expert staff member at the unit:
Plus, a Lead Nurse and a Clinical Nurse Specialist who both work with patients at Leeds General and St James’ University Hospital in the city.
They make sure each person having treatment on our wards gets the best possible quality care and is treated as a young person first, cancer patient second.
We opened our St James’s unit in October 2008 and refurbished it in January 2014.
Facilities at St James’s University Hospital Young Adult Unit
Two three-bed bays
Recreational room with kitchen
Day care room and study room
Complementary therapy room
Parent’s room with kitchen
Consultation room
Both areas are supported by all members of the TYA Team.
The TYA team is made up of:
Teenage Cancer Trust Lead Nurse
4 Teenage and Young Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist (one funded by Teenage Cancer Trust)
2 Teenage Cancer Trust Youth Support Coordinators one for each site
3 Young Lives Versus Cancer TYA social workers.
TYA psychologist
Learning Mentor
Teenage Cancer Trust Project manager and MDT co-ordinator
Aims of the service
Enhance care and co-ordinate patient choice using age-appropriate skills and TYA expertise
Provide access to supportive care and peer group support.
Guide and support the TYA and their family through the cancer journey
Promote return to life after cancer treatment
Provide the link between the different specialities and areas of care facilitated by the Key Workers
All Teenagers/Young Adults with cancer (TYAs) will have the support of the team regardless of where they are being treated. The team is mobile and will provide this support wherever they live and/or are having treatment. The TYA Service team members work closely alongside the specialist cancer teams and community-based teams.
It also works closely with, and forms part of, a wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) as previously detailed, working with both children’s and adult teams, including oncologists and haematologists, as well as other specialities that work with these young people who have such complex treatments.
The TYA MDT meets weekly to discuss all new patient referrals; this is where diagnosis will be confirmed, a treatment plan agreed, and place of care will be considered. Another aspect of this meeting is to discuss any psychosocial aspects that the young person/family may present with that impact on his/her treatment.
