Children’s Network
Principal Treatment Centres
Childhood cancer accounts for less than 1% of all cancers in the UK. Therefore, to ensure children receive some of the best care in the world, their care is coordinated and led by Principal Treatment Centres.
There are 13 Principal Treatment Centres across England and each child aged 0-15 years up to the 16th birthday with suspected cancer must be referred to a Principal Treatment Centre which make the diagnosis and direct the provision of highly specialised care. Treatments for cancer in children can be complex and intensive and are often delivered as part of a clinical trial. The Principal Treatment Centre will work in partnership with Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units, Community Children Nursing Teams, local specialist cancer services, supra-network services and all pertinent statutory, voluntary, and charitable organisations, to ensure children and young people with cancer and their families receive the right care, at the right time and in the right place.
Leeds Children’s Hospital
About us
Leeds Children’s Hospital is a regional specialist centre for the treatment of children and young people's cancer and the largest unit in the Northeast of England. We treat all cancers occurring in children and young people (including brain tumours, solid tumours and leukaemia’s and offer chemotherapy, radiotherapy, stem-cell transplant, and surgical treatments as required. We work as a multidisciplinary team and have weekly meetings to plan and review treatment, working closely with the radiology, surgery, and pathology departments to ensure prompt diagnosis and treatment.
In order to provide the best possible holistic care, the multidisciplinary team work closely together and include expert doctors, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, dieticians, play specialists, social workers, psychologists, teachers, youth workers, family support workers and other allied health professionals (see meet the team). We acknowledge this can be one of life's most difficult journeys, therefore all children, young people and their families are supported by a named keyworker (see Children's Haematology & Oncology Outreach Team and Teenage and Young Adult Clinical Nurse Specialist Team), who will coordinate care, that best meets their individual holistic needs. Leeds regional specialist children's service is led by:
Sue Picton (Lead Clinician)
Martin Elliott (Deputy Lead Clinician)
Julie White (Lead Nurse)
Michelle Kite (Matron/Deputy Lead Nurse)

We are proud to promote research in our work and seek to offer every child and young person the opportunity to contribute to high-quality scientific studies. We actively participate in national and multinational treatment trials for the treatment of cancer.
Our team were thrilled to have the high standards and quality of care acknowledged in being designated as a ‘centre of excellence in supportive care’ in December 2021 by the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC). Airedale NHS Foundation Trust
About us
Airedale Hospital provides standard level shared care with Leeds to allow patients with oncology diagnoses to receive their supportive care closer to home. Once Leeds have confirmed a diagnosis and started a treatment plan then our team becomes an integral part of your child’s care.
Our dedicated community nurses can access lines and take bloods at home or school, perform line cares and are an endless source of advice and support. Their telephone number will be provided to you, and they can be contacted Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
On our designated children’s ward (ward 17, zone C/location C20) we can provide blood transfusions and assess and treat children with temperatures (febrile neutropenia) or other treatment-related side effects. We have 4 en suite side rooms where we try to accommodate patients who are receiving active oncology treatment. One parent can stay on a parent bed overnight in the room beside your child and a parents’ room with facilities for making hot drinks is available. Televisions and Wi-Fi are available in each room. We have play specialists available most days who can provide activities for your child during their stay. Your child can use the playroom and outdoor spaces after being risk assessed. We can also provide schooling for your child during term time if required. We currently do not have the facility to provide parents with a meal, but you can store food in the parents’ room, order food to the hospital and use the canteen.
We are also able to follow your child up locally once your treatment has been completed in Leeds in our outpatient department (building 22/location B20) in Airedale Hospital. If you are having any difficulties with accessing prescriptions or other medical equipment, please also let one of the community nurses or clinicians know. We have children’s physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and dietitians available on the Airedale site who might be involved in your child’s care. We will continue to share your child’s care with the Leeds Oncology team until you are discharged to long term follow-up at 5 years post diagnosis.

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust
About us
We help to ensure optimal diagnosis and management of children and young people with febrile neutropenia presenting to POSCUs, including intravenous and oral antibiotics, and to enable timely and appropriate communication and referral of these patients between the POSCU and the PTC as required and as necessary. We provide haematological support, i.e. the administration of blood and/or platelet transfusions as required and if appropriate; this service is available on both sites.
We also provide nasogastric and gastrostomy feeding support, (NG tubes can be re-passed on the Children’s units at Huddersfield and Calderdale), administration of sub cutaneous medication e.g., GCSF, central line flushes, blood sampling and equipment provision meaning that patients will need to access the PTC less frequently. We offer ‘off treatment’ follow up with the lead clinician at the POSCU in conjunction with the PTC where this may be appropriate.
We provide a chemotherapy clinic at Rainbow Community Hub with support from Leeds children’s oncology team.
Our new Rainbow Community Hub! - YouTube.
All oncology patients will have a designated Paediatric Oncology Community Nurse as a keyworker ensuring continuation of care.

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
About us
We work with the Oncology team in Leeds to help to deliver care closer to home for children diagnosed with cancer. We work very closely with the Community Nursing Teams, for example we can help with bloods tests and look after children when they have a raised temperature (febrile neutropenia).
The service is provided at:
The York Hospital
Scarborough General Hospital
Out in the Community
Children who have cancer and who are looked after in Leeds or other tertiary centres are referred to the shared care centre when they are diagnosed. GPs speak to the paediatrician on call in York or Scarborough if they suspect a child has cancer. The on-call consultant will then speak directly to the specialist oncology team in Leeds and the shared care team in York and Scarborough.
